So I'm working on a fantasy novel about merfolk (that is, mermaids and mermen) and I was thinking about if Hytale would have them. Obviously we haven't seen any sign of them - but I think it would be interesting to speculate on what they would be like in the game.

I think they fit well with Hytale's fantasy theme, and the very good looking oceans. It would also fill out the oceans better than minecraft I think - in Minecraft the only real place to go in the oceans is ocean monuments. Hytale looks to have more than that, but I think it would also be cool if you could find a merfolk village.

Furthermore, while we've seen diving gear, perhaps an upgrade from that could be a more magical method of turning into a merperson to explore the ocean more freely.
